Faye K. Haag is the Choral Music Director at SSHS. She is a Highly Certified Teacher currently in her 16th year at Smiths Station High School with a total of 23 years teaching experience in schools in Texas, Virginia, and Alabama. She is a native of Columbia, Tennessee, and is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Her degree is in Vocal Music Education and is certified to teach grades K-12. Her major instrument is Voice, with minors in Piano and French Horn. She is a member of Delta Omicron, AVA, MENC, and ACDA. She is the Choral Music Director for SSHS and directs 4 choirs and one ensemble at the school. She is also Sponsor of Tri-M Music Honor Society. She has over 25 years of private vocal teaching. Her husband, Ed, a Minister of Music for over 25 years. He is currently the Marketing Director for Chick-Fil-A in Opelika, Alabama, at Tiger Town. He is also a reserve deputy and chaplain for Lee County Sheriff's Department and chaplain for Opelika Post of Alabama State Troopers. They have one son - Jon Edward who is 34 years old. He is single and pursuing a career as a chef and food service worker.
Mrs. Haag has had vast experience with performance as a vocal soloist and also in Musical Theater and Classical Performance. She uses her expertise to lead her choirs to achieve excellence in their singing and performance. Her philosophy of Music Education is to lead students to experience excellence in all they do, to push themselves to reach their highest level of performance, and to be productive and positive human beings in their world now and in their future.
The Choirs at Smiths Station have grown from one choir of 34 singers in 1999-2000 to over 150 students involved in up to 5 choirs - SSHS Singers (Beginning Choir), Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Women's Choir, and Men's Choir. There are also an ensemble available to students -Elite Ensemble- a mixed ensemble - 6 guys and 6 girls. The choirs in recent years are consistent at achieving Superior Ratings at Evaluations and competitions. We are being asked to sing for many local organizations in Alabama and Georgia, Schools, Churches, and Corporations.
The SSHS Concert Choir, Women's Choir, and Chamber Choir have been selected as Best of Festival Choir at the National Peanut Festival Choral Competition in Dothan, Alabama, 3 different years. This competition draws choirs from 4 or 5 different states and is always an interesting mix of SATB, SSA, SAB, and Show Choir groups.
The SSHS Chamber Choir was selected to perform for the 2009 AMEA Conference at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.They performed 30 minutes of selected classical, folk, and gospel selections.
Each year the Senior Show Choir performs 4 to 6 concerts for the community and area schools. The theme of the revues has been quite varied: Broadway - Classic and Contemporary, Disney Spectacular, Great Movie Music, The Beatles, We are the World-Decades 1970 - 2000, A Night at the Opry, and 2012 - Love My Country - a combination of Patriotic and Country Favorites with a recognition of all 5 major branches of our US Military Forces.
On March 18 the SSHS Choirs - SSHS Concert Choir (90 members), SSHS Women's Choir (60 members),SSHS Men's Choir (23 members), and SSHS Chamber Choir (32 members) - all received the Distinguished Musicianship Award along with straight #1 ratings from all judges at the State Choral Evaluations. This included their concert performances and their sightreading.
Mrs. Haag and the SSHS Chamber Choir were selected to sing in the National Youth Festival Choir at Carnegie Hall on April 1, 2012, with Dr. Z. Randall Stroope directing. 51 students and adult chaperones made the trip and it was an awesome experience. She also continues to encourage each graduating Choral student to continue in school or in a job that will keep them involved in fine arts in some way.
April 2013 the SSHS Competition Choir - (made up of Chamber Choir and Advanced Choir Members) placed 3rd in a National Choirs of America Competition in Orlando, Florida, at Rollins College. This involved a performance at Rollins and a clinic with Dr. Z. Randall Stroope and a Mass Choir Performance at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center.
October 2, 2013, the SSHS Competition Choir (75 singers) sang for the Alabama State Fair Choral Competition and placed 2nd. The Choir did three songs for the competition and then performed in a Finalists' Concert that night.
